GroupBStreptococci(GBS)arefoundinabout25%ofallhealthyadultsandpregnantwomenintheintestine,vagina,andrectalarea.Mostwomenwhoarecarriersofthebacteriadonotshowanysymptoms;however,undercertaincircumstances,infectionofboththemotherand/orthenewborncandevelop.Innewborns,iftheGBSinfectiondevelopsinthefirstweekoflife,itistermedearly-onsetdisease.IftheGBSinfectiondevelopsfrom1weekto3monthsofage,itisreferredtoaslate-onsetdisease.Onaverage,approximately1,000bABIesintheUnitedStatesdevelopearly-onsetdiseaseeachyear,withsimilarratesforlate-onsetdisease.
