StreptococcuspyogenesisthesolespeciesofLancefieldgroupAandisoftencalledgroupAstreptococcus(GAS),becauseitdisplaysstreptococcalgroupAantigenonitscellwall.

InfectionsduetocertainstrainsofS.pyogenescanbeassociatedwiththereleaseofbacterialtoxins.Throatinfectionsassociatedwithreleaseofcertaintoxinsleadtoscarletfever.OthertoxigenicS.pyogenesinfectionsmayleadtostreptococcaltoxicshocksyndrome,whichcanbelife-threatening.S.pyogenescanalsocausediseaseintheformofpostinfectioussyndromes.Theseautoimmune-mediatedcomplicationsfollowasmallpercentageofinfectionsandincluderheumaticfeverandacutepostinfectiousglomerulonephritis.
