BACKGROUND

Picornavirusesaresmall,non-envelopedRNAviruseswithanicosahedralcapsidandasinglestrand,plus-senseRNAgenome.Thegenomeencodesasinglepolyproteinthatisproteolyticallyprocessedbyviralproteasesintostructuralandnon-structuralproteins.Thefamilyofpicornavirusesincludesnumeroushumanandanimalvirusesincludingmorethan100SEROtypesofhumanrhinoviruses(HRV).HRVinfectionsarecharacteristicupperairwayinfections(themaincauseofthecommoncold),andtheyprovokesignificantlowerairwaysymptomsforpatientswithasthma,cysticfibrosis,orchronicobstructivepulmonarydisease.
