Neisseriagonorrhoeaeisagram-negativecoccusandisthecauseofthesexuallytransmitteddiseasegonorrheawithhumansasitsonlynaturalhost.Althoughitdoesnotproduceanyexotoxins,Neisseriagonorrhoeaehasawiderangeofvirulencedeterminants.Thefirststagesofinfection,whichincludeadherenceandinvasion,aremediatedbysurfacecomponents;N.gonorrhoeaefirstattachestoepithelialcellsbymeansofitsfimbriae.Afterinitialattachment,thebacteriaenterasecondstageofbindingmediatedbytheoutermembraneproteinP.II(alsoknownasOpa)whichisneededfortightbindingandinvasionofepithelialcells.P.IIfromonebacteriumwillbindtolipooligosaccharideofanadjacentbacterium,whichallowsfortheconstructionofasmallcolonythatmayfunctionsimilarlytoabiofilm.NeisseriagonorrhoeaealsoproducesanIgA1proteasethatmaytakepartinthecolonizationstage.
