BACKGROUND

Hemoglobinistheiron-containingoxygen-transportmetalloproteininredbloodcellsofallvertebratesaswellasinthetissuesofsomeinvertebrates.Inmammals,hemoglobinmakesupabout35%ofthetotalcontentofredbloodcells.Ithasanoxygen-bindingcapacityof1.34mLO2pergram,whichincreasesthetotalbloodoxygencapacityseventy-foldcomparedtodissolvedoxygeninblood.Themammalianhemoglobinmoleculecanbinduptofouroxygenmolecules.

Hemoglobinalsocarriessomeofthebody'srespiratorycarbondioxide(about20–25%ofthetotal)ascarbaminohemoglobinaswellasnitricoxideboundtoathiolgroup,releasingitatthesametimeasoxygen.OthercellsthatcontainhemoglobinincludetheA9dopaminergicneuronsinthesubstantianigra,macrophages,alveolarcells,andmesangialcellsinthekidney.Inthesetissues,hemoglobinhasanon-oxygen-carryingfunctionasanantioxidantandaregulatorofironmetabolism.
