BACKGROUND

Gonadotropin-releasinghormone(GnRH),alsoknownasluteinizinghormone-releasinghormone(LHRH),isa10aminoacidneurohormoneproducedinthehypothalamus.GnRHstimulatesthesynthesisandsecretionofthetwogonadotropins—luteinizinghormone(LH)andfollicle-stimulatinghormone(FSH)—bytheanteriorpituitarygland.Characteristicofallreleasinghormones,andmoststrikinginthecaseofGnRH,isthephenomenonofpulsatilesecretion.

Undernormalcircumstances,GnRHisreleasedinpulsesatintervalsofabout90to120minutes.AbnormalitiesinthepulsatilesecretionofGnRHresultinsubnormalfertilityandabnormalorabsentmenstruation.ConstantadmiNISTrationofGnRHsuppressesgonadotropinsecretion,whichhastherapeuticbenefitsincertainpatients,suchaschildrenwithprecociouspubertyandmenwithprostatecancer.
