BACKGROUND

Collagens(typesI,II,III,IV,andV)aresynthesizedasprecursormoleculescalledprocollagens.Thesecontainadditionalpeptidesequences,the“propeptides”,attheamino-andcarboxy-terminalends.Propeptidesfacilitatethewindingofprocollagenmoleculesintoatriple-helixconformationwithintheendoplasmicreticulum.Thesepropeptidesarecleavedfromthecollagentriplehelixduringitssecretionafterwhichthecollagenspolymerizeintoextracellularcollagenfibrils.Therefore,theamountoffreepropeptidescorrelatesdirectlywithcollagenmoleculesynthesis.ProcollagenTypeIC-peptide(PIP)hasbeenextensivelyreferencedinstudiesthatcorrelatedcollagenlevelsanddisorderssuchasbonedisease,alcoholicliverdisease,livercirrhosis,andscirrhous(BorrmanntypeIV)adenocarcinomaofthestomach.
